Established in 2014, the American Medical Women’s Association Chapter at the University of Houston is an organization dedicated to promoting the advancement of women in medicine and advocating for women’s health. We aim to create a strong sense of community while providing resources to our members to help prepare them for their pre-health professions. Our organization provides opportunities for mentorship, community service, personal development, and professional development. Our team hopes to enhance pre-medical education and forge a better foundation for community cohesion by incorporating advocacy and community service.
As an organization situated in one of the country’s most diverse cities, we work to raise awareness of health disparities that are prevalent in our local communities. We strongly believe in the importance of community cohesion and identity when it comes to the general health and wellbeing of a population. We aim to enhance pre-medical education by contextualizing health disparities as they are relevant to our local community.
We are constantly looking to participate in or establish long term volunteer programs with local organizations. Service is an integral part of the healthcare field and as an organization, we hope to provide our members with opportunities for personal development through service.
We regularly collaborate with the university’s career and financial offices to better prepare our members for graduate school applications. We also work to inform our members on how to apply to graduate school, further education, and their future career by working with test preparation services, alumni in graduate healthcare programs, and healthcare professionals. We are dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to our members that will further enhance their pre-medical education.
Effective mentorship is one of the most important determinants of career success. We look to build a community of women in medicine through yearly socials and events. We provide internal as well as external mentorship opportunities with students from the Baylor College of Medicine AMWA branch to provide our members with guidance throughout their undergraduate years.
